Japan Men's Esthetic Etiquette Guide — Do's and Don'ts for First-Timers
Japanese salons are very welcoming to foreign guests. The etiquette is mostly common sense.
Before You Visit
Shower beforehand. If you've been sightseeing in summer heat, a quick rinse before heading over is strongly recommended.
No heavy cologne or aftershave. Strong scents interfere with treatments.
Arrive 5–10 minutes early. Allows time for paperwork and changing without rushing.
At Reception
Remove your shoes at the entrance. Look for a shoe rack or step up in flooring.
Speak quietly. Japanese service environments are calm by design.
Complete the health form honestly. Use Google Translate camera mode if it's in Japanese only.
During the Session
You control the pressure. Thumb-up or thumb-down — therapists adjust immediately.
No phones. Set to silent before the session begins.
No photography inside the treatment room. This is an absolute rule.
Safe word: Say 'chotto' if uncomfortable — the therapist will stop immediately.
After the Session
Tipping is NOT done in Japan — this is critical. Offering a tip is considered rude. Pay the listed price. Say 'arigatou gozaimashita' as you leave.
Drink water in the hour after your session. Don't rush out — rest first.
Cancellation Etiquette
Cancel as early as possible — most salons ask for 24-hour notice. Same-day cancellations are considered poor form.
