Before You Go: A Simple Preparation Guide
Visiting a men's esthetic salon in Japan for the first time is straightforward — salons are designed to handle everything for you. But knowing what to expect in advance makes the experience smoother and more relaxing.
What to Wear
Wear comfortable easy-to-remove clothing. You'll be asked to change into a robe or disposable shorts provided by the salon when you arrive so there's no need to dress up. Loose trousers and a simple t-shirt are ideal.
Avoid:
- Complicated buckles or laced shoes (you'll remove shoes at the entrance)
- Tight jeans or body-hugging clothes that take time to remove
- Strong cologne or heavy perfume — treatment rooms are enclosed
What to Bring
Salons provide everything you need during the session including robes, towels, slippers, and shower facilities.
The only things worth bringing:
- Cash — many salons do not accept cards especially smaller independent ones
- Your phone — for translation apps and your booking confirmation
- Nothing else — lockers are provided for your belongings
Showering: Before or At the Salon?
Most salons have a shower for clients to use before the treatment. You do not need to shower before arriving. Most staff prefer clients shower at the salon using their products as it helps open pores and prepares the skin.
What Not to Bring
- Alcohol — arriving intoxicated will result in refusal of service
- Strong cologne or perfume
- Large bags — lockers are typically small so leave luggage at your hotel
During the Treatment
- Lie down and relax — you don't need to make conversation
- If you feel uncomfortable raise your hand or say chotto (ちょっと)
- If pressure is too strong say mou sukoshi yasashiku (もう少し優しく — a little gentler)
- Translation apps on your phone are always available
